Mole Removal Using Laser Surgery by Nicola Milne
Mole removal by laser surgery is one of the most expensive mole removal procedures, this is far outweighed by the benefits of the procedure as laser mole removal produces the least amount of scarring. This surgical procedure works best on moles that are black or brown in colour and preferably flat as the laser does not penetrate deep enough into the epidermis in order to remove protruding moles.
In areas where excision may not be an option such as the face, laser therapy can work very well. Due to the fact the pain felt through laser surgery is so minimal most patients do not require any local anaesthetic. The most that is reportedly felt is a slight tingling sensation similar to the feeling of being snapped by a rubber band. The laser is normally a hand held device that works by using a specific wavelength that destroys the mole pigment while avoiding healthy skin; it seals the blood vessels surrounding the mole and vaporizes the skin tissue. The procedure can last up to 30 minutes and you will be treated on an outpatient basis.
After the procedure a scab will form over the area where the mole was, this will not last and will normally drop off once it has healed after a couple of weeks. The benefits of mole removal laser surgery are that no stitching is required as the skin is essentially cauterised by the procedure. This procedure also has a high rate of success with reduced chances of repeat treatment being required.
Mole removal by laser surgery does have many advantages, however there are many other alternatives that can also be tried such as natural and over the counter remedies. In the end it all boils down to what is best for the patient.
