Bowl Straight
A Bowling Tip To Improve Your Game by Jeff Higgins
I was playing my last game, when I rolled my eighth gutter ball in the tenth frame. Even with the help of my hefty handicap, my team was facing still another defeat, behind our opponents by about twenty pins, and the only thing that could save the win, was if I was able to throw a spare, followed by a strike. I ran through my release and breathed deeply, as I waited for my ball to come back. I realized that it was time to get serious. I approached the line, readied myself, took several steps, and pointed my ball toward my chosen mark. A resounding “POP” was heard up and down the lanes, as the ball left my hand, and I soon realized that my thumb was responsible for this loud sound. The pain in my thumb was an afterthought, as I notice that my ball was slowly making it’s way down the lane, and heading straight for the pocket. But, much to my dismay, when my ball was within three feet of the head-pin, it hooked drastically, and made a beeline for the gutter. It was another painful loss for our team, but more importantly, it was another critical blow to my belief in myself as a bowler. I knew that my future on the team was in jeopardy if I didn’t make some adjustments.
I would spend most of my time the following week, doctoring my thumb, and attempting to ascertain what mistakes I had been making. Sometimes the answer is so close, we don’t see it – for me, my bowling ball was at the root of my trouble. I was bowling with an old ball that I had gotten from another bowler on my team, as I was a novice bowler, and new to the league. I decided to do some analysis of the subject, and soon learned, that a ball that was not properly fit to your hand, can lead to lack of ball control, and injury to the fingers. So, I headed to the pro shop at my bowling alley, with my ball. Employees of the shop measured my hand, and it was determined that my ball, in it’s present form, was appropriate for my measurements, and required only to be plugged and drilled.
I retrieved my ball in just a couple of days. The difference was amazing! I now had a ball that fit comfortably on my hand. I played with my modified ball for the first time, the following day. I was thrilled to throw three games with a total of nine strikes and not even one gutter ball! It was incredible! Making the small modification, of correctly fitting your ball to your hand, surprisingly, can make a huge difference in your bowling game. I don’t spend my time stressing over whether I will be thrown off my team anymore. But, I am constantly striving to improve my game, and increase my average.
If your ball doesn’t fit, you may need a new ball. Be sure to check out bowling balls for sale at your local pro shop.
